“Political prisoner.” Why does the anti-American left insist on maintaining that anti-American terrorists are “political prisoners,” or “insurgents,” or engaged in “resistance” -- anything but what they are, anti-American terrorists?
In the case of Oscar Lopez Rivera, the Left claims that he was never involved personally in any act of terrorism and, even if he was, he merely targeted property. Both charges are bogus and, frankly, irrelevant.
Using the Left's logic...
Charles Manson is a 'political prisoner' because he 1) was attempting to 'effectuate political and societal change', and 2) never actually killed anyone...personally.
Adolph Hitler wasn't responsible for the Holocaust because he 1) was attempting to 'effectuate political and societal change', and 2) never actually killed anyone...personally (outside of, perhaps, his combat role in WWI).
Josef Stalin wasn't responsible for the tens of millions of people who died during his regime because he 1) was attempting to 'effectuate political and societal change', and 2) never actually killed anyone...personally.
Chairman Mao wasn't responsible for the tens of millions of people who died during his regime because he 1) was attempting to 'effectuate political and societal change', and 2) never actually killed anyone...personally (outside of his combat role).
Pol Pot wasn't responsible for the millions of people who died during his regime because he 1) was attempting to 'effectuate political and societal change', and 2) never actually killed anyone...personally.
Osama bin Laden wasn't responsible for 9/11 and other atrocities because he 1) was attempting to 'effectuate political and societal change', and 2) never actually killed anyone...personally (outside of, perhaps, his 'combat role' in the Afghanistan war against the Soviet Union).
In the United States, as well as other jurisdictions around the world, our laws do not require one to actually pull the trigger, slice the throat, place the bomb, fly the plane into a building, etc, in order to be guilty of the crimes associated with any of those actions. If you drive the getaway car or act as a lookout in an armed bank robbery where one of your conspirators has killed a teller, under the law, you are as guilty as the person who actually pulled the trigger. Under what we call 'felony murder' in many jurisdictions, Oscar Lopez Rivera didn't actually have to build the bomb, place it in a building, and set it off thereby killing and injuring people to be guilty of seditious conspiracy, conspiracy to commit terrorism, etc.
